FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s special about your roof fixing method, how does it work?

Monkeytoe top fixing roofing clips have specially fabricated jack stud which is threaded into the roofing clip then sits on the purlin below.

The jack stud is then tek screwed onto the purlin and the Monkeytoe clip screws down the outside of the stud until it is sealed onto the roofing profile. Using this unique Monkey Toe fixing, all loads are transferred to the building structure – not the roofing product.

How do we know whether the roof profile is top fixed or hidden fixed profile?
Generally you will see a nail or tek screw line in a top fixed profile.
On a raised plant platform when are safety handrails required?
Generally when the platforms is closer to the edge of a roof than 2000mm and when raised more than 300mm above that of an adjacent platform or the Roof.
What is the maximum weight that your condensers mounting system can support?
The standard units are 0-80kg, HD are 80-150kg and the super HDs can support up to 300-500kg depending on the roof pitch and the actual physical dimensions [please ask the MKT consultants for a special design].
What do we need to know to order a Condenser Mounting Frame?

The following detail is required:

  • How many condensers do you have to mount?
  • Approx. weight of Condenser Unit
  • Roof profile type (so we can provide you with the correct fixing type)
  • Purlin spacings (our mounts span from purlin to purlin)
  • Roof Pitch (we’ll make sure your Mount has enough adjustment so that the condenser will sit level, i.e. won’t be on the same angle as the roof).
What are the advantages of having a Mesh Platform over a Skeletal Platform?

A Mesh Platform provides the service personnel a service area, further enhancing the protection of your roof.

It means the servicemen are working on the same level as the mechanical units, making it easier to service.

It is also safer as they are working on a level area rather than standing on the slope of the roof.

If my purlins are supporting a Monkeytoe platform, how do I use my purlins to transfer the loads towards the building bracing system?

Generally, the platform induced lateral loads can be transferred to braced walls/portal frames/shear walls through roof diaphragm actions by the roof sheeting or other forms of diaphragms such as plywood.

In the case where the diaphragm is absent or inadequate, the lateral load transfer can be achieved through axial tension/compression actions of the purlin in the along direction and through out of plane bending and shear in the across direction.

In this case the client’s structural engineer is required to carry out this check. Monkey Toe can assist with this if required.

How long are Monkeytoe products designed to last?

Monkeytoe products are designed for the long-haul with most of our structural components having a lifetime warranty of 25 years.

All our products are designed for long life in harsh rooftop coastal environments. Aluminium is a highly durable with some aluminium products like statues lasting more than 100 years.

Some of our products have a shorter warranty such as Hushmonkey which has a 10-year warranty, this has a replaceable insert which can be easily replaced as required.

Can Monkeytoe custom design Stairs or Handrails?

At Monkeytoe we regularly provide custom designs for stairs, this is vital to keep the steps all at an even height. Because the steps must be even to prevent embarrassing faceplants(provide link) a small height change of 20 mm will mean a different stair design this means a site measure should always be done before final design and manufacture.

Our consultants can provide you with 3D models and drawings of our standard stair systems for most applications with single flights, these can normally be provided the same day. All stair designs come with handrails to ensure they comply with regulations. For large or custom applications, a custom design is recommended see here.

For standalone handrail systems we can provide standard drawings and for large custom jobs a custom design is available

What size upright do I need for my Condenser Mount?

To get the correct size/length upright for the condenser mount you will need to know the purlin spacing and the roof pitch, for more information about this please see here(link to choosing cond mount).

Once you have these details you can use the below chart to confirm the length needed. The standard lengths available are 150 mm, 300 mm, and 600 mm.

What Kpa loading are our bridges designed to?

Typically, our bridges are designed for loads from 2.5Kpa – up to 5Kpa this means for every square meter the bridge must withstand 250 kg (for 2.5Kpa) to 500 kg (for 5Kpa) for the entire surface area.

For each increase in loading requirement there is an increase in the size, cost, and materials of the bridge.

The loading recommendation will depend on the access and typical use, for instance a walking bridge on private property will not have the same load requirements as one on a busy public park.

For areas open to public access in metro areas or on highways typically require a 5kpa rating.

Can harness points be added to your walkways?
We currently don’t have a pre-engineered solutions for mounting harness points to our standard walkways products, however if do have an application that requires this we can provide custom engineered solutions as required.
